Choosing a Career that Aligns With Your Beliefs

Chick-Fil-A is one of the most well-known examples of a company that integrates its beliefs into its business practices. They’re famously closed on Sundays with their website stating that they started the practice to give employees a day off and the ability to worship if they choose to. They’ve always been outspoken about their beliefs and interweave them into their company.

This integration is well-received. According to the American Customer Satisfaction Index, in 2020, Chick-Fil-A had the highest score of all restaurants. It is one of the most successful chain restaurants in the US.

Chick-Fil-A imbues its culture with its Christian faith.

Finding a company that shares the same spiritual/ethical values as you do, such as the Christian faith, is extremely important in your happiness, longevity with the company, and confidence in what you are doing.

Look at the Industry as a Whole

Does the industry as a whole reflect your values? Is there a possibility for change? Certain industries have standards that may not align with your values and you have to ask yourself if you’re okay with that. If not, potentially look into another industry.

Research the Company

When applying to a new job, be sure to look into the company, especially if you’re looking for a company to align with your ideals and values. Most companies have a lot of the information you’re looking for available online on their website.

Usually located within or near the ‘about’ section on the website, you can find information about the values or ethics of the company in either the mission statement on the page or in a section labeled values. The vast majority of companies have these options available.

It may be beneficial to take a look at the media attention surrounding the company as well. Look at recent news articles, blog posts, and even employee testimonials to get a clear glimpse into the inner workings of the company.

Join Professional Associations

Joining professional associations is a way to network and potentially find companies that share your same personal values. Through networking, you can gain a deeper understanding of different companies rather than just what you read on the company’s websites.

It also allows you to meet professionals in your field who share the same personal values and beliefs.

Include Your Values on Your Resume

Seeking a job that mirrors your values is important. Companies look for applicants with similar ideals, so including them on your resume would be a good chance to show the company that you are applying to that you value the same things that they do.

Examples of Core Values in the Workplace

  • Collaboration
  • Creativity
  • Fun
  • Opportunity for advancement
  • Risk-taking
  • Travel
  • Work/life balance

You can determine your core values by asking which of these you value over the others. You also may have other core values that aren’t listed here. Don’t be afraid to write out the things that you find most important in the workplace.

Career Paths Defined by Professional Ethics

Certain industries are defined by your values. Journalism and public relations are prime examples of that. There are many careers within both industries that are guided by your values. For example, in journalism, you can look to work for a publication that produces content that is in line with your social values and ethics, and in public relations, you could potentially work for a political candidate who shares your ideals.

Marketing is another industry that is guided by your values. Because you’re essentially selling a product or service, being sure what you are marketing aligns with your values is extremely important.

Other industries have ethical laws that guide them such as the medical industry. HIPAA’s privacy rule makes sure that doctors have a legal obligation to keep your medical information private.

While these and similar industries may be more obviously value-driven, all careers can be leveraged in some way toward your core values. Having a career that is amplified by your core values can lead to a happier, more fulfilling future.
